What’s the Difference between Karats and Carats?

gold earrings

If you’re anything like me, you appreciate fine jewelry for its visual splendor and not so much because of the technical details. Still, it’s nice to have some background knowledge about precious metals and gemstones so that you can make informed purchasing decisions. One hurdle that occasionally trips up jewelry enthusiasts is the difference between karats and carats.

When spelled with a “k,” the word denotes a measure of purity in precious metals – especially gold. For instance, 14k gold earrings are roughly 59 percent pure. Gold jewelry can never be 100 percent pure because it requires an alloy to achieve its form. Carats, on the other hand, are units of mass that are useful for measuring gems and pearls. Since the unit was standardized in the early 20th century, one carat has been considered the equivalent of 200 mg.
