How to Get that Tarnish to Vanish
While nothing compares to the eminent gleam of new sterling silver jewelry, over time the substance can tarnish and fade. Believe it or not, the best techniques for dealing with that problem have been developed in average households and passed on through generations. While a fancy, specialized silver cleaner might work just as well, you might prefer to try the following free alternative first.
Place a layer of tinfoil over the bottom of a glass dish and put the sterling silver rings on top. The silver should touch the aluminum. Sprinkle baking soda over the jewelry and top it off with enough boiling water to submerge the rings. Don’t be alarmed if you smell the sulfuric odor of rotten eggs – that means the proper chemical reaction is taking place. Allow water to cool, then rinse the jewelry with tap water. The tarnish has vanished.
